once in the black ground we met each other and lit the powder a sudden rush of deep red fire throttled upward and scorched all life there was a child without a name buried alive in fields of flame the old people said In the books i’ve read "it’s not the first blast but the afterdamp that takes you with it to the other world" bitten by the mountain our little girl i ran to the camp and gathered the men “i lost my baby i swear i did” ten of us strapped up as day turned to night set out with lamps on down to the old mine my wife went homeward the women told her “it’ll be alright come daylight” but there was no sign of of our child to be found for all the searching into the wee hours i shone a light on the mouth of the mine boarded up and empty and strangely quiet john said “you can’t be thinking of going into the mine to look for your baby” i said “i’ll go on with or without you” he looked to the others and said he’d come too the mine was colder i drew my hands closer to get them even a little bit warmer we called to her and were met with nothing but a pale echo of our own calling the mine got so dark the further we walked john started coughing but we kept on going i felt so tired and my stride became rigid it felt like struggling against a river a sudden crash sent me up and running i turned to find that john was collapsing i flung john over gave his chest a swift punch balling my fists like cracking a walnut he coughed and choked and loudly cried “we’ve got to go or we’ll die” i couldn’t give up on my baby but john wrestled with me and forced me into leaving the old people said In the books i’ve read "it’s not the first blast but the afterdamp that takes you with it to the other world" bitten by the mountain our little girl john and i met back with the men at the camp they said they’d no luck after we’d split up i took the long walk back to the house the air was fresh and i took a deep breath i started coughing then i doubled over onto the clover and started hacking i woke up at home as my eyes adjusted I saw my wife was warming the oven “oh my darling we went out searching for our sweet baby and found nothing” my wife came over placed a hand on my head she looked puzzled and quietly said “the old people said In the books i’ve read 'it’s not the first blast but the afterdamp that takes you with it to the other world' bitten by the mountain our little girl our little girl without a name you and i both know what has happened: did you not watch as we fed her the flower? the flower you picked from the mountain pasture? our little girl,” she started to cry, “do you not remember? we threw down the old mine” the old people said in the books i’ve read "it’s not the first blast but the afterdamp that takes you with it to the other world" eaten by the mountain, our little girl.
